Leadership which is not Adaptive is Managership with instinct of Dinosaurs

Reflecting on the above quote might help us realize the significance of Adaptability. This is especially pertinent when we consider the role leadership has played across different contexts in the wake and aftermath of the Covid pandemic. The endeavour to survive and in some cases, even thrive, despite the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity has given us cause to reflect on both, the conventional and unconventional leadership and management mindset.

In my opinion, Adaptability as an element of Adaptive Leadership signifies the role modelling of core behaviour, by the most influential people in an enterprise; of dynamic adjustment and alignment with dynamics of internal and external changes. This role modelling of key behaviours aligned to Adaptability lead to building of Plan C (Culture) which facilitates the building of an ecosystem enabling successful execution of growth strategy and sustainability of talent,  resources,  environment, social mores and governance.

Plan C catalyses change management and promotes values of resilience and agility within the enterprise led by the change management vision and strategy co-created via a working ethos that is aligned both, top-down as well as bottom-up.

With all the learnings from the pandemic and surviving the pandemic, resilient and agile leadership will be the preferred approach taken by many enterprises leaders. This will help shift focus from strategy creation, execution and risk management, to engaging all stakeholders of the enterprise in co-creating dynamic culture.

The present and the future belong to organisations which will achieve sustainable profitable growth through Culture Building and not through age old convention of strategy execution. Consequently, we will likely see strategy focused Culture being replaced by Culture focused Strategy.

Ultimately, "Culture is God, Strategy is disciple!"
