Head HR - Tekion Corp

A core member of HR teams, which scaled up operations of blue-chip companies, such as Microsoft, VMware in India, in the last 13 years. Heading HR since the last 7 years for Tekion, a start-up, founded by ex-Tesla technology team, with an innovative product for the automotive sector. As its first employee, I oversaw the recruitment and expansion of Tekion’s global team to 3000+ innovators in India and the US.

Q:Could you share a specific project or initiative in which you demonstrated exceptional HR leadership and innovation? What were the key outcomes and lessons learned?
A:As the first employee of Tekion in India in 2016, my role was instrumental in establishing an exceptional HR team dedicated to crafting innovative and robust HR processes and tools aimed at building a high-performance engineering team. Guided by a strategic vision, my journey seamlessly progressed from a solo employee to nurturing a thriving workforce of 3,000 people. Reaching the milestone of 300 employees was a pivotal moment, especially, as we prepared for the launch of our innovative and revolutionary product. Recognizing the significant growth potential, we embarked on a mission not only to attract top-tier talent but also to innovate in promoting their career development and retention.

Our all-encompassing approach highlighted the numerous advantages of joining Tekion, including competitive compensation, attractive benefits, participation in ESOPs, abundant career growth prospects, a vibrant workplace culture, continuous learning opportunities, and exposure to cutting-edge tools and technologies. Opting for an unconventional path, the overall Employee Value Proposition (EVP) offered at Tekion played a central role in our rapid expansion, attracting and retaining over 3,000 innovators within an impressive 18-month timeframe. This success vividly illustrated the impact of our holistic approach in positioning Tekion as an enticing and dynamic workplace in the fiercely competitive market.
Q:As an award-winning HR professional, how do you balance the needs and expectations of employees with the goals and objectives of the organization?
A:Having previously worked in multinational technology corporations, my transition to a hyper-growth startup like Tekion marked a significant shift. The distinction between established and new companies became evident as, at Tekion, we undertook the formidable task of building everything from the ground up. The rapid scaling posed varying expectations for employees who joined at different stages. Those who joined early had different expectations compared to later joiners. Consequently, we carried out an extensive exercise to define the employee value proposition (EVP), a framework now implemented globally.

While employees' expectations vary across regions due to cultural influences, we curated a distinctive work culture at Tekion. This approach enabled us to synchronize employee expectations with the organization's goals and objectives. Our EVP effectively communicates what the company expects from its employees, aligning on various parameters. Additionally, special sessions were organized to ensure employees remain aligned with these expectations and do not deviate from the established framework.
Q:In your experience, what qualities and skills are essential for HR professionals to succeed and make a positive impact in today's dynamic workplace environment?
A:In any organizational setting, HR serves as the primary interface for employees. Whether employees encounter professional or personal challenges, HR is their first point of contact. As a result, HR plays a vital role in bridging the gap between employees and management. The ability of HR to maintain strong relationships with both employees and management is a significant advantage. Effective people management, negotiation, leadership, a deep understanding of organizational behaviour and its resolution, proficiency in managing group dynamics, and the skill to persuasively engage individuals are indispensable qualities for HR professionals to positively impact the workplace. Additionally, possessing excellent listening skills, empathy, integrity, and a collaborative approach are essential for the success of any HR professional.
Q:Would you recommend PeopleFirst HR Excellence awards, to more members of your fraternity and why?
A:I would strongly endorse this award platform to my HR community, as it stands out as a prestigious recognition that acknowledges high achievers, acknowledges accomplishments, and echoes the concerns, challenges, and prospects of the HR community. This platform serves as an excellent forum for like-minded professionals who are committed to making a meaningful impact on the organizations they serve. I commend the transparent selection process and the platform's solid reputation.
Q:How do you think participation in PeopleFirst HR Excellence awards, contributes towards your function and your organization at large?
A:Participating in the awards brings me great joy, as it serves as a validation of our efforts within the organization. While work often doesn't necessarily require recognition, the acknowledgment from PeopleFirst highlights and validates our significant contributions to organizational growth. While I've always maintained the belief that there are no firsts among equals, this award notably reinforces the essential role that HR plays in constructing a stellar organization. Moreover, it is likely to inspire my colleagues to aspire for similar achievements.
